George Washington, America's first president, has been called by various descriptions, like "The Father of Our Country." History has recorded the kind of leadership he gave the Continental Army in the struggle for freedom. From Valley Forge to Yorktown he was the commander-in-Chief, establishing a standard seldom met by those who followed him in service to their country.
Of course, he was a great private citizen, and an outstanding jurist before he was called into service for the new country in the making. Washington was a member and an elder of the Episcopal Church, just a step off the Anglican Church, in America. In his public statements he spoke of God in a way that demonstrated his faith in the Lord as one who would help humankind in time of need. It was only right that fellow Americans would call upon him to be the first President of the United States of America.
The day of inauguration came, and time came for George to take the oath of office and make his pledge to lead. After he spoke his vows, he added four more words never before used that way. He said: So help me God!
The humility of this great man was so impressive, his addition of those four words set a precedent to their use almost universally as other citizens have spoken vows before man and God. Can we do less?
