Object: some signs ("Standing Room Only," "Full," or "Sold Out")
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever gone to a really good movie and could not get in because all of the seats were taken? (let them answer) Maybe you went to a game or you tried to get into a parking lot and there were so many cars that they could not take one more in the lot. If you did any of these things then you will have seen the kind of signs that I brought with me this morning. Look at these signs because I am going to tell you a story that you will always remember about Jesus. (hold up your signs and let them read them very slowly) "Sold Out," "Standing Room Only," and "Full." Those are the kind of signs that you see when you have gotten to the place that you wanted to go and there was no room for you to get in.
A long time ago Jesus was having a wonderful time traveling through small villages and the countryside. Wherever he went he healed the sick people and he preached about God and his wonderful world. The people came from everywhere. As soon as they heard that Jesus was coming, the town would begin looking for him and making plans of how to get the sick people in their family to Jesus so he could heal them. People would run ahead for miles to announce to their friends that Jesus was coming.
One day on such a trip, the people put away their work, cleaned up their houses, and looked for ways to carry their friends who were sick to a place where they could meet Jesus. You must remember that they didn't have cars, busses, or trains. They had to carry people on stretchers or put them in carts. Jesus came to town and went to the biggest house he could find and began to teach. Pretty soon the crowd was so large that there was no room in the house. It was full, sold out, there was not any standing room. All of the space was gone. Most of the people stood outside and hoped that they would get to see him when he left.
But not everyone felt that he could wait. Some people had a friend who was paralyzed. He could not walk. So these friends thought of another plan. They heard that there was not one space left in the house, around the doors, or even in the windows, so they climbed to the roof. After they reached the top of the roof, they took part of it off and then, holding ropes on both ends of the stretcher, they let their friend down through the hole in the roof until he was right in front of Jesus. How Jesus must have laughed at the sight of seeing this man coming to him out of the sky! Of course he healed him and he told the men "Thanks" for thinking so much of him and of their friend. Isn't that a good story?
If you see a "Sold Out," "Standing Room Only," or "Full" sign someday I hope that you will remember the time when Jesus was preaching to a full house and how he healed the man who came to him out of the sky.
