Storm Shelter
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle B
Call To Worship
Consider the following provisions for a storm shelter for the spirit: willingness to listen for God, readiness to hear God, love of knowledge, an attitude of praise rather than of ridicule, openness to new and other ways of doing things, dedication to the truth.
Collect
We come, O God, with hearts open to discern what is true and what is wise, knowing that truth and wisdom come from you. Strengthen us for living within the freedom of your truth and your wisdom. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Wisdom is hard to come by, God. Our usual stubbornness, short-sighted self-interest, and arrogance are inadequate equipment for meeting the calamities that overwhelm us. We pray that you will continue to find ways to offer us counsel. Through the name of Jesus. Amen.
54B Hymns
"Open My Eyes, That I May See" Tune: OPEN MY EYES
"O God, O Lord Of Heaven And Earth" Tune: WITTENBERG NEW
"Dear Jesus, In Whose Life I See" or "Sun Of My Soul, O Savior Dear" Tune: HURSLEY
Proper 19
Sunday between September 11 and September 17 inclusive
Second Lesson: James 3:1-12
Theme: Watch Your Tongue
Call To Worship
Is your tongue a catalyst that motivates others to improve themselves? Is your tongue a teacher of important matters? Is your tongue a rudder for a fair and right course?
Collect
Let the words that come out of our mouths be acceptable to you, O God. Let our words reflect the wisdom we glean from gathering as your church and being your people. In the spirit of Christ. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Just as I am may not be good enough, O merciful God, yet we know we must come to you as we are before we can hope to change. Forgive us for the errors of tongue that have led to trouble. Forgive us for the letting go times when a few ill-chosen words inflame an insult. Hearten us so that we do not give up on ourselves. Amen.
54B Hymns
"Just As I Am" Tune: WOODWORTH
"Lord, Speak To Me" Tune: CANONBURY
"There's A Wideness In God's Mercy" Tune: WELLESLEY
Proper 19
Sunday between September 11 and September 17 inclusive
Gospel: Mark 8:27-38
Theme: You Missed The Mark, Peter
Call To Worship
You got it right, Peter, when you answered Jesus saying, "You are the Messiah," but you blundered, Peter, by scolding Jesus.
Collect
Strengthen us to face what we must face, O God, knowing that you will remain by our side. Bring to us those who will call us to the reality of what will happen and to the honesty of consequences. In the name of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
How often, O God, we start out right, then become self-protective when we hear truths we would rather not hear. Our humanness overrides our first response and we draw away from the agitation or refuse to take it seriously. Help us to get back on track before it is too late. Amen.
54B Hymns
"Before Your Cross, O Jesus" Tune: ST. CHRISTOPHER
"How Can I Say Thanks" Tune: MY TRIBUTE
" 'Take Up [Thy][Your] Cross,' The Savior Said" Tune: DEUS TUORUM MILITUM, GERMANY, or NUN LAST UNS DEN LEIB BEGRABEN
