Call To Worship (Isaiah 49:13-16a)
One: Sing for joy, O heavens, and exult, O earth; break forth, O mountains, into singing! For the Lord has comforted his people, and will have compassion on his suffering ones.
All: But Zion said, "The Lord has forsaken me, my Lord has forgotten me."
One: Can a woman forget her nursing child, or show no compassion for the child of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.
All: See, I have inscribed you on the palms of my hands.
Collect
Lord, let this be your time of favor when you call us out of hunger, confusion, and darkness through the light of your Word and the power of your Spirit. Amen
Prayer Of Confession
Guide us by your healing springs, heal our wounds, forgive our sins, restore the life we have rejected. Lord, remember us in your kingdom! Amen.
Hymns
"Softly And Tenderly Jesus Is Calling"
"Built On The Rock The Church Doth Stand"
"I Know That My Redeemer Lives"
Eighth Sunday After Epiphany
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 4:1-5
Theme: Who Died And Made You God?
Call To Worship
Approach, God's people, the one who is true judge with true justice. Approach the throne of mercy. Receive God's commendation and care.
Collect
Lord, we come fearing condemnation and are surprised in the Lesson of your word that you dispense commendation. Surely you see the world differently than us, you who are creator, you who are family, you who are friend. In the Lesson of your word may we learn more of your good will. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
If we have set ourselves up in our place as judge and jury of our sisters and brothers, we confess this sin and pray that you will forgive us, and restore us to our place with all the other sinners, deserving of punishment but content with the surprise of forgiveness and salvation. Amen.
Hymns
"O God Of Love, O Power Of Peace"
"For The Healing Of The Nations"
"Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence"
Eighth Sunday After Epiphany
Gospel Lesson: Matthew 6:24-34
Theme: Amen!
Call To Worship (Matthew 6:28-29)
Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.
Collect
Lord Jesus, we desire now not only to listen to your words, but to learn from your wisdom - and live! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Not in the frantic gathering of the world's illusions, nor in the hectic race to keep up with fad and fashion, but only in this, Real God, Real Lord, will we find rest and repose - in our close consideration of the birds and the lilies and the care you give to all your children. If we cannot serve two masters, then we must choose you to be Lord of our life and the foundation of our true security. Amen.
Hymns
"Seek Ye First The Kingdom Of God"
"O God In Restless Living"
"Sometimes A Light Surprises"
