Struggling with past sin
Worship
LECTIONARY WORSHIP AIDS
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Often our past gets in our way, hindering God's redeeming love and forgiveness.
People:
Our past bothers us, because much of it is contrary to God's will.
Pastor:
Struggling with our past is difficult, but God gives us victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!
People:
Praise God for a salvation that erases the sins of our past, and gives us a new life for the future with Christ Jesus our Savior!
Collect
God of mercy and grace, you know the inner conflict with past sin so often harasses us. Give us victory in Christ; that once and for all we may turn our backs on the sins of our past, and move forward in faith, assured of a new beginning with Jesus our Savior, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We often have high hopes, Lord, but then our past creeps up, and our high ideals for tomorrow are crushed by the memory of sins in the past. We constantly struggle with who we have been and who we want to become. Forgive us for the power we grant to our past, instead of trusting in the power of your redeeming love. Turn us around to enjoy a new life yet to be created by you, redeemed from a past you have forgiven. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Ask Ye What Great Thing I Know"
"Jesus, Lover of My Soul"
"O Thou, in Whose Presence"
"Thou Hidden Source of Calm Repose"
PROPER 8
Sunday between June 26 and July 2 inclusive
Second Lesson: Romans 6:3-11
Theme:
Dead to sin, alive in Christ
Call to Worship
Pastor:
When we are baptized into the Christian faith we are baptized into new life in Christ.
People:
Christ died on the cross; and our old nature is put to death with him.
Pastor:
And because we have died with Christ, we shall also live with him!
People: May God help us be true to our new life in Christ!
Collect
Almighty God, who raised your Son from death to life, giving us power over sin and the grave: Remind us of the faith to which our baptism witnesses, that we may keep ourselves firmly rooted in the new life to which Christ has saved us. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
Father, we have died to sin with Christ on his cross. That is our faith. But sin continues to try to get a hold on us; and we have difficulty letting Christ raise us to new life. Forgive us for a witness which denies our baptism, and fails to destroy the power of sin in our lives. Give us faith which is strong enough to convince us of the death and resurrection which Christ has effected within our hearts; that we may truly be alive in Christ Jesus our Lord, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"I Want a Principle Within"
"Lord, I Want to Be a Christian"
"Love Divine, All Loves Excelling"
"O Come, and Dwell in Me"

Gospel:
Matthew 10:34-42
Theme:
The cost of discipleship
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Christian discipleship demands complete surrender to Jesus Christ.
People:
We confess that, too often, our piety is more in our minds than in our muscle.
Pastor:
Jesus is first and last in the lives of his disciples. All that we do or think is based on our commitment to him.
People:
May God guide us into total commitment as we consider the cost of discipleship.
Collect
Almighty God, whose Son has given us a very serious call to follow him with complete loyalty: Strengthen our faith in him as Lord and Savior; that we may be willing to bear the cross assigned to us as his disciples. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We want to be disciples of Jesus, Father; but we are frightened when we hear how demanding discipleship really is. So much of our lives seems to be in conflict withwhat you require. Forgive us when we have made decisions based on personal interest, rather than on our commitment to Christ. Help us to establish all our activities as opportunities to be in discipleship for Christ, through whom we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"A Charge to Keep"
"He Who Would Valiant Be"
"My Jesus, As Thou Wilt"
"Take Up Thy Cross"
