Object: a speeding ticket
Good morning, boys and girls. (hold up the speeding ticket) Have you ever seen one of these? (let them answer) This is a speeding ticket. A police officer gave me one of these because he said I was driving too fast in the city. I sure didn't like the way he told me that I had to slow down while driving in the city. Of course, the thing that I didn't like the most was the idea that it is going to cost me a lot of money when I go to court. Then the judge will give me a big talk, and I will have to listen and promise him that I won't drive the way I was driving in the city. Even after the talk the judge gives me, I will still have to pay the fine. That kind of driving sure does make me suffer and suffer a lot. How do you think you would feel if you were arrested by a police officer, made to go to court, and then pay a big fine for driving a little bit too fast? Pretty bad, that's how you would feel. But you learn a lot when you suffer. I don't drive as fast in the city as I used to drive.
We all learn to obey by suffering. Sometimes our moms and dads make us suffer to teach us to obey. The police officer made me suffer and now I obey the speed laws. Suffering may hurt for a little while but if it teaches us to obey, then it is worthwhile. Maybe the next time you think you are suffering too much, you will remember how Jesus suffered for us, and then you will be thankful for his obeying the Father.
