Tears

Object:
A pitcher filled with water and a tissue.
Message: Can you remember the last time you cried about something? I think I can probably guess what some of those things were that made you sad. Have any of you ever fallen down and hurt yourself and then cried for someone to help you? Have you ever cried because someone was being a bully and took something away from you? How many of you have ever been hit or pushed by an older brother or sister and then cried because your feelings had been hurt?
When you are growing up there are a lot of things that hurt and end up making us cry. And even though I would like to tell you that changes when you became a grown-up, I can't do that. There are also a lot of things that make moms and dads and grandmas and grandpas, and grown-ups in general, cry or feel sad. We have our feelings hurt. We are disappointed because something we really wanted to happen, didn't happen. Or sometimes we even get hurt physically just like you, and that makes us cry.
Today I brought along this pitcher filled with water. I would say that if a person were to collect the tears that we cry over the course of our whole lifetime - from the time we were young children until we are near the end of our lives - they might fill a pitcher like this. In fact, I brought a tissue along today to use with those tears. (Put the tissue in the water) But look what happens. It is not enough to handle all these tears.
That is why the words of Jesus are so important when He says that He will wipe away all the tears from our eyes. A tissue can take away the tears on our faces, but it cannot do anything for the sadness in our hearts. However, Jesus can do a much deeper work within us. He can take the hurts, and the disappointments, and the sadness that is deep within our hearts and touch us with His healing and strength. He can soothe over those wounds inside us so that we experience His peace and comfort where there used to be sadness.
