Call To Worship (Psalm 45:6-7)
Your throne, O God, endures forever and ever. Your royal scepter is a scepter of equity; you love righteousness and hate wickedness.
Collect
In gardens and in fields we planted with hopes of a harvest. Lord, we praise you with greater fervor than we enjoy that first fresh tomato, or the smell of new cut herbs. Live with us. Last with us. In your word, with your world, we pray. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, our passions are many -- are you one of them? You know better than us. We praise you with our lips. Now we offer up our hearts. You, lover, singer, player, hear our prayers. Amen.
Hymns
Morning Has Broken
This Is My Father's World
All Things Bright And Beautiful
Proper 17 / Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Second Lesson: James 1:17-27
Theme: The Real Old Time Religion
Call To Worship (John 4:23 and James 1:27)
One:
When Jesus spoke to the Samaritan woman he said:
All:
"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father seeks such as these to worship him."
One:
The hour has come to worship God in spirit and in truth. James, the brother of Jesus, warns us that this means more than simply saying the right words when he writes:
All:
"Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep oneself unstained by the world."
Collect
Lord, we gather in spirit and in truth, determined to do more than talk the talk, or just mouth the phrases the world wants to hear, or simply put in our time on Sunday morning and leave behind your word the rest of the week. We gather together determined, with your help, to become your living word, as far as we are able, to practice a faith that is pure and undefiled, to help all who are needy in their distress, to keep ourselves unstained by the world's motivations, so that our lives might become a satisfactory offering to your glory. You are the giver, the source of all good things. As we gather in the good things of the world in one hand, we seek to measure them out to your children with the other. Bless us in our worship today. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You have told us through your prophet, James, the brother of Jesus, what would be a true and acceptable faith. Now it is up to us to follow. We follow, Lord. Amen.
Hymns
Thy Word Is A Lamp Unto My Feet
That Old Time Religion
We Give Thee But Thine Own
Proper 17 / Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Theme: Cleanliness Versus Godliness
Call To Worship (Psalm 15:1-2)
One:
O Lord, who may abide in your tent? Who may dwell on your holy hill?
All:
Those who walk blamelessly, and do what is right, and speak the truth from their heart....
Collect
Thank you, Lord, for your cleansing word. We take hold of the life that saves. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession (based on Mark 7:6-8)
The prophet spoke rightly about us hypocrites. We honor God with our lips, but our hearts are far from you. We would not worship you in vain. We turn from human tradition, human precepts, to your true commandments, to love you with our hearts, souls, minds, and strengths, and to love our neighbors as we do ourselves. It is not too late. It is time. We pray these things with contrite hearts. Amen.
