Theme: When God Began To Create ...

Lectionary Worship Aids
Series VII, Cycle B
Call To Worship
Light from darkness, order from chaos, God names and claims and calls it all good! It's all good! God is well pleased with us! Let us rejoice and praise God's name!
Collect
God of creation, your light shines on all the people. In this light we see the glory of beginnings. Let this be a day of new beginnings for us, for your people, for your world. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
What a world you have put in our keeping! What a creation whose heighth and depth and width and length we can never fully plumb. We confess our callous disregard for the small portion of the cosmos you have put in our keeping and pledge to worship you by caring for creation. Amen.
Hymns
I Sing The Mighty Power Of God
Songs Of Praise The Angels Sang
God, Who Stretched The Spangled Heavens (Holy Manna)
First Sunday After The Epiphany / The Baptism Of Our Lord
Second Lesson: Acts 19:1-7
Theme: Half The Gospel
Call To Worship
One:
When God created the world with a word, this word followed from God:
All:
God saw the world was good, and said so.
One:
When Jesus was baptized by John he rose up out of the water, and a voice was heard to say:
All:
You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.
One:
As we gather together with the assurance of God's love, acceptance, and favor, we pledge to extend these gifts to all others as well.
Collect
Receive the Holy Spirit in truth and power. Cast aside your cloak of fear and walk into the light! Claim God's power to heal and reveal. Descend upon us, Holy Spirit! Surprise the world again with your gracious power! Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
What just happened? The Ephesians knew only part of the gospel. There was more, so much more, to be given, to be gathered. What part of the gospel do we claim? What part do we ignore because it doesn't fit our lives conveniently? God, send a measure of your Spirit's power, so in your light we might see and receive your saving power. Amen.
Hymns
Morning Has Broken
Spirit Of The Living God
Rock Of Ages
First Sunday After The Epiphany / The Baptism Of Our Lord
Gospel Lesson: Mark 1:4-11
Theme: I Can See Clearly Now!
Call To Worship (built around Mark 1:7-8)
One:
Hear the words of John the Baptist, who proclaimed:
All:
"The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."
Collect (incorporating the prayer of Richard of Chichester)
Gracious Lord, we pray for your Holy Spirit to descend and to move in our midst this day, binding us together in your love and acceptance. We gratefully thank you for your presence in our midst, and humbly pray that you will challenge us in our worship so we might see you more clearly, love you more dearly, follow you more nearly, day by day. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Holy Spirit, patiently wait for us to catch up to your promise. In the face of your goodness we hold back, wrapped in our prejudices, fears, and grudges. We claim the waters of baptism, immersing ourselves in the new life. The time is now! We confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Amen.
Hymns
O Day Of Rest And Gladness
Come, Gracious Spirit
Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine
