The new expression of what has been happening in some of the top business corporations of America well describes the effort to remove all incriminating evidence.
When the news media first told of Enron Corporation and its false front of prosperity, we could hardly believe such terrible things could happen. Not only was the business unprofitable, but all retired employees no longer had a retirement fund that they had trusted for their future income.
Then we learned that another huge corporation, World Com, was also in dire financial straits. And other businesses were in deep trouble. This did shake the business world so much that the stock market dropped to unheard of lows, and we wondered what could happen next.
That's when the expression, "They cooked the books," was heard so frequently in the news.
If we look in the Holy Bible, we read that Moses gave this advice to the Hebrew children in their desert trip toward the Promised Land: "Be sure your sins will find you out" (Numbers 32:23 NRSV). The Old Testament prophets Isaiah and Ezekiel also echoed the concept in their prophecies.
Saint Luke, in his Gospel, quoted Jesus, "That which you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed upon the housetops" (Luke 12:3 NRSV).
How terrible that innocent people are left destitute while those who "cooked the books"live on in the height of luxury.
Slowly, but surely, justice will prevail, even in the business world.
