THURSDAY IN HOLY WEEK
Worship
Lectionary Worship Aids -- Series C
First Lesson: Jeremiah 31:31-34
Theme: The new covenant written on our hearts
Call to Worship
Pastor:
We gather around our Lord's Table in celebration of our new covenant with God.
People:
We are here this evening, because this covenant is written on our hearts, not tablets of stone.
Pastor:
Our feast of love is a celebration of honest love: God loves us, and we love him.
People:
We love God, because Christ has shared with us, love like we have never experienced. Praise his name!
Collect
Father in heaven, who took a broken covenant and made it new by the blood of your only Son: Join us at your table as we celebrate your love for us, and our love for you, that we may be bound together in a love relationship which will last forever. In our Savior's name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We come to you as your children, Father, but we come as children who have denied your fatherhood. Forgive us for broken laws, willful disobedience, and sins of self-interest. Touch our hearts with the conviction that we are yours, bought with a price. Help us to be faithful in our discipleship as you are faithful in being our Father. In the name of Christ we pray. Amen.
Hymns
"Here, O My Lord, I See Thee"
"In Memory of the Savior's Love"
"The King of Heaven His Table Spreads"
"There Is a Fountain"
No. 83 - THURSDAY IN HOLY WEEK
(Maundy Thursday)
Second Lesson: Hebrews 10:16-39
Theme: Confidence in Christ's Atonement
Call to Worship
Pastor:
Our Lord's table is ready. The time to celebrate is here.
People:
Praise God for his Son, who made atonement for our sin once and for all!
Pastor:
Let us celebrate then, not as though no change has taken place in our life, but with rejoicing for being saved to a new life!
People:
We come dependent on God's mercy and forgiveness, but also with renewed dedication to live that new life he has saved us to!
Collect
Heavenly Father, who, through your Son, has paid a high price for our forgiveness, symbolized by these elements of bread and wine: Inspire us to rid all uncleanness from our lives in thanksgiving for the redemption your Son gives. In his name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
O holy Father, we are making ready to approach your table in celebration. But we are not ready by any merits of our own. Our sinfulness is a too consistent characteristic of our lives. We need cleansing and forgiveness that only you can give. We plead for your forgiveness, that all sin might be removed from us, so that we may come with purity and truth, to celebrate your sacrificial love. We pray through Jesus, our High Priest. Amen.
Hymns
"Bread of the World"
"Breathe on Me, Breath of God"
"O For a Closer Walk with God"
"Sinners Turn, Why Will You Die"
No. 84 - THURSDAY IN HOLY WEEK
(Maundy Thursday)
Gospel:
Luke 22:7-30
Theme: God's new covenant
Call to Worship
Pastor:
We gather as people of the new covenant which has been sealed with Christ's blood.
People:
God has made us his own through Christ, even though we have sinned against him.
Pastor:
We celebrate that redemption as we commune with our Lord at his table.
People:
We dedicate this service to the memory and praise of our Lord's sacrificial love for us.
Collect
Gracious Lord, you have offered yourself to be in covenant with people who need your love, but who continually sin against that love: Receive us as we come in humility to celebrate the new covenant of love with which you have redeemed us through the atoning grace of your Son our Savior, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Prayer of Confession
We are unworthy, Lord, to share in this sacred feast. We come to your table as people who have betrayed your love. Forgive us for our diligence with which we sin. Cleanse us within, that we may commune at your table in full assurance of your forgiveness, and in honest dedication to live as people of your new covenant. We pray through Christ, who sealed this new covenant with his blood. Amen.
Hymns
"Come, Every Soul by Sin Oppressed"
"Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine"
"Come, Sinners, to the Gospel Feast"
"Jesus, Thou Joy of Loving Hearts"
