Call To Worship
Leader: Come, let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
People: and for his wonderful works to those who love him.
Collect
Lord, we thank you for every sign of your abiding love. Everywhere we look we see signs of your amazing creation. We glory in the gift of your Son, Jesus Christ, who has demonstrated your love for us. Yes, this is a time for singing, and we raise our voices in praise of you. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
O God, with every passing season you come to us and invite us to go with you that we might come to know your love. You never cease loving us even though we do not deserve it. In this time of worship let us seize the opportunity to respond to your call by saying: "Yes, we will go with you!" Amen.
Hymns
"Let's Sing Unto The Lord"
"Morning Has Broken"
Proper 17/Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Second Lesson: James 1:17-27
Theme: Hearing And Doing
Call To Worship
Do any of you think you are religious? If so, do not deceive yourselves by just listening to God's word; instead, put it into practice.
Come, and as we worship let us listen for God's word. Let us prepare ourselves to go from this place and put it into practice.
Collect
Almighty God, by your Holy Spirit take control of our lives. May our actions show to the world that your love abides in us and through us. We do not wish to pay lip service only to your commands, but to be loyal participants in the work of your kingdom. Thanks be to you, O God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we confess that we are often quick to speak and slow to listen. We are ready with a quick retort when we should be trying to understand what is troubling others. Forgive our quick tempers, we pray, and help us to become good listeners, ready to seek reconciliation and eager to show forth your love. Amen.
Hymns
"Lord, Whose Love Through Humble Service"
"Forth In Thy Name, O Lord"
Proper 17/Ordinary Time 22
Sunday between August 28 and September 3 inclusive
Gospel Lesson: Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23
Theme: Evil Ideas Lead To Immoral Deeds
Call To Worship
When we break God's commands we are often quick to blame outer circumstances. Let us come before the Lord this morning ready to take responsibility for our actions, and seeking a pure heart.
Collect
Heavenly Father, we, your children, need your help. O Creator God, we come asking you to create in us clean hearts. We know that the evil that is in us shows up in our greed, deceit, jealousy, slander, pride, and folly. By your Spirit establish your love in our hearts that it may shine in our every word and action. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Lord, we are prone to judge ourselves and make decisions based on what is acceptable in society. Wake us up, Merciful God, to the freedom you have given us from customs and conformity that we may follow your will and only your will in deciding what is good and right and pleasing to you. Amen.
Hymns
"I Want A Principle Within"
"Lord, I Want To Be A Christian"
Leader: Come, let us thank the Lord for his steadfast love,
People: and for his wonderful works to those who love him.
