Lectionary Worship Aids
Series V, Cycle B
First Lesson: Isaiah 6:1-8
Theme: Whoa!
Call To Worship
A throne, seraphs, a live coal touched to the mouth of the prophet Isaiah to cleanse his lips from sin? Whoa, you say. What on earth does Isaiah's curious vision have to do with me? Hear the bottom line. Isaiah did not take off in the opposite direction when encountering God. Rather, he stayed, listened to God's question, and answered, "Here I am. Send me." How does God gain your attention? Have you the courage to say, "I'll go on a mission for you, God"?
Collect
Here we are, O holy One, who comes to us as Creator, Savior, and Sustainer. We are listening as your Spirit speaks in equally novel ways to each of us. Grant us the boldness to be ready and to come forward with a "Yes!" Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Triune God, who sometimes meets us in such strange manners that we, too, say, "I am lost," give us the courage to recognize you and respond to you with honesty so our conversations might continue. Amen.
37B Hymns
"Holy, Holy, Holy" Tune: NICAEA
"Every Time I Feel The Spirit" Tune: AFRICAN-AMERICAN or PENTECOST
"Lord, Dismiss Us With [Thy][Your] Blessing" Tune: REGENT SQUARE or SICILIAN MARINERS

Second Lesson: Romans 8:12-17
Theme: Spirit Of Adoption
Call To Worship
Enthusiasm, readiness, eagerness, patience, longing, hope -- this is the spirit of pre-adoptive parents awaiting their chosen, already loved child. So also is the spirit of adoption within the Holy Parent. Come into the family of God as approved, adopted children of God. Let us praise God together.
Collect
In the name of the Parent, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, we come to you and pray to you, O God. We come willing from our innermost hearts to acknowledge that we are yours so that we might leave behind all fear. We come willing to be led by the Holy Spirit so that we might lead others. For your sake. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Be the guardian of our hearts through the presence of your Holy Spirit. Be the champion of our plans through your Spirit. Be the defender of our decisions, O triune God. Amen.
37B Hymns
"Holy God, We Praise Thy Name" Tune: GROSSER GOTT, WIR LOBEN DICH
"We All Believe In One True God" Tune: WIR GLAUBEN ALL' AN EINEN GOTT
"Holy, Holy, God Of Glory" or "God The Spirit, Guide, And Guardian" Tune: HYFRYDOL

Gospel: John 3:1-17
Theme: New
Call To Worship
Leader: The whole reason God sent Jesus into the world is so we, his creation, might be saved.
People: What are we saved from?
Leader: Ourselves, eternal chaos, all that separates us from God and from right relationships with those around us.
People: What are we saved for?
Leader: New life, new beginnings, new paths, the newness love brings.
Collect
We come to you on this day of new beginnings. We trust to you, O Holy Spirit, our rebirth from above. Come to us so we might know newness of life. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
You said whoever believes, God. We, like Nicodemus, wonder how anyone can be born after having grown old. The habits we detest are as much a part of us as the way we walk. We have greeted the new day in the same manner for a lifetime. We meet change with our own typical responses. How can we be born anew with all these encumbrances? Dare we with so little understanding turn our hearts over to your holy Spirit? Amen.
37B Hymns
"Come, [Now][O][Thou] Almighty King" Tune: ITALIAN HYMN
"This Is A Day Of New Beginnings" Tune: BEGINNINGS
"All Creatures Of Our God And King" Tune: LASST UNS ERFREUEN
