Aids To The Psalms
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
You have set your glory above the heavens.
Out of the mouths of babes and infants
you have founded a bulwark because of your foes,
to silence the enemy and the avenger.
When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars that you have established;
what are human beings that you are mindful of them,
mortals that you care for them?
Yet you have made them a little lower than God,
and crowned them with glory and honor.
You have given them dominion over the works of your hands;
you have put all things under their feet,
all sheep and oxen,
and also the beasts of the field,
the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea,
whatever passes along the paths of the seas.
O Lord, our Sovereign,
how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Alternate Image
The Singer considers his travels, all the marvelous sights. He closes his eye and pictures the craggy barren mountains, the gentle rolling hills and level plains. His inner eye gazes on the creeks, streams and raging rivers cutting patterns into the land eventually emptying into the vast oceans. He sees the night images of shadows, the moon and the myriad of winking stars. All these things tell the Singer of God's power, might and creativity. The Singer's thoughts turn to people. What puny things we are in relation to the rest of God's creation; we are infinitesimal by comparison. Amazed, the Singer considers, God sees us as the best of all creation. How can that be? Yet, God has made us stewards of all creation, given responsibility for the land, sea, and air and its inhabitants. What incredible respect and honor God has shown us. Even that gives distinctive praise to God who can make weak creatures strong.
Reflection
All the negative images we have of ourselves. It seems that one of our greatest abilities is to denigrate ourselves. Not that this is without reason. Our track record as a species leaves a lot to be desired. We have not reflected tremendous character in our care of the earth, land and sea and its creatures. But God sees more. When parents look at their newborn child, do they see a diaper messer, a totally self-absorbed creature? No, they see a creature of loveliness and potential. God must have even greater ability. To see the negative requires little talent, creativity or imagination. To see dreams and visions for what we can and might be does require talent, creativity and imagination. In God's high regard of us, God shows us once again how great our God is.
