Used Up

Object:
A rock, a light bulb, an empty milk carton, and a tube of toothpaste that is partially used.
Message: This morning I would like to talk with you about things that seem to run out at just the wrong time. Let me give you an example of what I mean. Let's say your mom or dad made a batch of your favorite cookies. You came home from school and had several for a snack. Then you took some for your lunch for several days in a row. And when you left for school on the next morning you noticed there were only two cookies left in the jar. You thought about those cookies all day, just waiting to come home to enjoy them. Only when you walked in the door, you discovered that someone else had been there first and eaten them all up! Those cookies just ran out too soon!
That is not only true of cookies. I have a number of things here today that seem to run out at the wrong time. Have you ever gone into the bathroom to brush your teeth and discovered a tube of toothpaste that is rolled up and flat and looking as though there isn't much of anything left in it? You squeeze so hard and you just barely get enough out of it to brush your teeth. Toothpaste always runs out at the wrong time.
Or what about light bulbs? Have you walked into a room and switched on the light, only to see a quick flash of light and then nothing but darkness? Those bulbs always burn out at night when you need them. Why don't they ever seem to burn out during the day?
And how about the milk at your house? Do you ever come down for breakfast and find only a few drops of milk left in the container? How can you have a bowl of cereal with only a few drops of milk? That has probably happened to all of us!
Now the last thing I have today is a rock. If you put this rock outside on a hot day, it isn't going to melt. And if you have it in your kitchen, it isn't going to get used up. In fact, this same rock will probably still be around when all of you are grandmas and grandpas a long time from now! Rocks do not change! And the Bible says our God is an everlasting rock. That means He doesn't change! His love for us is just as strong today as it was when Jesus died on the cross. His care for us is just as strong as when He created the world! Jesus says He is the same yesterday, today, and forever, and that means we can always trust Him to be there and to help us when we call upon Him.
