PETER: (ARRIVING HOME) Hi, honey.
I'm home.
RUTH: (OFF STAGE) Is that you, honey?
PETER: Of course, it's me. I'm home.
RUTH: Just put the fish on the fire, will you? I'll be in in a minute.
PETER: (TO HIMSELF) I don't have any fish.
RUTH: What's that, dear?
PETER: Nothing, dear.
RUTH: (ENTERS)
Did you have a nice weekend, dear? (SHE GIVES HIM A HUG AND KISS) Oh, you better change that old cloak. You've gotten it all wet. Dear, you didn't put the fish on the fire.
PETER: There aren't any fish.
RUTH: You're a fisherman. What do you mean, there aren't any fish?
PETER: We didn't go fishing.
RUTH: You're a fisherman. You look like a fisherman. You certainly smell like a fisherman. Didn't you catch any fish again?
PETER: We didn't go fishing.
RUTH: You didn't go fishing? You went out with the guys.
PETER: On another mission.
RUTH: What was it this time?
PETER: Well, Jesus performed some exciting miracles.
RUTH: He's doing that a lot, isn't He?
PETER: He sure is.
RUTH: What is it this time? More healing I suppose.
PETER: He did a little of that, of course -- those who wanted to be healed. No, this time He concentrated on feeding 5000.
RUTH: What's that? Five thousand people? He fed 5000 people?
PETER: Actually there were more than that. That's just all the men we could get counted.
RUTH: He fed that many? How did He do that?
PETER: Well, it was great. There was this kid there with a couple of fish and some bread and Jesus just made it become more somehow.
RUTH: That's a lot of fish and bread.
PETER: And we had twelve basketfuls left over.
RUTH: Are you telling me you had that much left over and you didn't even bring home a fish?
PETER: That's about it.
RUTH: I bet Matthew took home a fish to his wife.
PETER: No, he didn't.
RUTH: He didn't?
PETER: No, he didn't. No one did.
RUTH: Well, what happened to the leftovers?
PETER: It's a long story.
RUTH: I'm all ears.
PETER: Yeah, well, we were just preparing to come home and Jesus made us get in the boat and leave without Him.
RUTH: How was He getting home?
PETER: I'm getting to that. So, there we were rowing and one of those nasty little storms blows up, you know, and we were getting the worst of it.
RUTH: And you had the twelve basketfuls of food?
PETER: Don't rush me. Yes, the baskets were in the bottom of the boat but the waves got so bad the bread was getting all soaked and then all the food was washed overboard anyway.
RUTH: No wonder you're all wet.
PETER: There's more.
RUTH: Okay, go on.
PETER: All right. Well, there we were getting soaked and being driven farther from the shore and guess what we saw?
RUTH: I don't know. What?
PETER: Jesus.
RUTH: Jesus?
PETER: Jesus. Right. There He was, walking on the water.
RUTH: Wait a minute. Wait just a little minute. Peter, I don't mind you telling these tales of healings. I saw Mother healed, but don't you think walking on the water is a bit too much to be believed?
PETER: I'm not kidding. He was walking on the water. Actually walking on the water.
RUTH: What will He think of next?
PETER: A lot of the guys thought He was a ghost.
RUTH: A ghost! I guess they would think that. Imagine, walking on the water. Why would He do that?
PETER: Maybe because it was the quickest way to get to us. I don't know. It doesn't matter. The fact was He was walking on the water.
RUTH: I don't know. Walking on water. I just don't know. Next He'll have you doing crazy stunts like that. Well, what happened next?
PETER: (PAUSE) Well, I, ah ... (IN A SMALL VOICE) I walked on the water, too.
RUTH: What?
PETER: Now, don't get excited.
I just had to try it too.
RUTH: Walking on water?
PETER: Yes. I did it, too.
RUTH: You?
PETER: I did. I just said, "Lord, if that's really you, tell me to come to you and I will."
RUTH: And He did?
PETER: Right. He did and then I walked on the water, too.
RUTH: How far?
PETER: What?
RUTH: I said, how far? How far did you walk on the water?
PETER: (IN A SMALL VOICE) About ten feet.
RUTH: Ten feet? That's it?
PETER: Well, how far have you walked on the water?
RUTH: That's not the point, is it? The point is all this hullabaloo and you didn't even bring home any fish for dinner.
PETER: That's not the point.
RUTH: Well, what is the point?
PETER: I'm going to tell you the point. The point is I walked on the water.
RUTH: Ten feet.
PETER: Well, I did it anyway. And I know I did it for sure.
RUTH: Wait a minute. What happened after ten feet? Did you stub your toe on a wave?
PETER: (IN A SMALL VOICE) I got scared.
RUTH: (SHOWING CONCERN) You got scared?
PETER: And then I began to sink. But Jesus reached out His hand and saved me.
RUTH: So that's how you got all wet.
PETER: Yeah.
RUTH: Well, here, let me help you out of that cloak. It's water logged. Aren't you my water walker.
PETER: I sure am.
RUTH: Well, would you look at this! (PULLING A FISH OUT OF HIS CLOAK)
PETER: I guess I am a fisherman after all.
If we just trust Jesus He will take care of our needs.
