What About Heaven?

Matthew To Revelation
Object: some cutouts from construction paper of clouds, angels, harps, and a throne
Good morning, boys and girls. Today we are going to do something different from usual. You have heard me talk to you about heaven many times, and so today I am going to ask you to tell me what your ideas of heaven are. When you think of heaven, what do you think about? (let them answer) You think of angels, but what else do you think about? (continue to get as many answers as you possibly can from them; resist the temptation to get laughs from what they say and they will tell you many interesting things about their view of what heaven is like - if they feel that they are being made fun of at this point, they will keep their imaginations to themselves) Those are very good answers. I thought that you might say some of the things you did so I had some things like angels and clouds and harps cut out of construction paper and when we are finished this morning, you can take them with you.
But heaven is a real place just like any of the other places that we have only heard about but never visited. I have read about Africa and India, but I have never visited them. The only thing about heaven is that you don't visit heaven any more than you visit the earth. Heaven is not a place in the sky, but I am not really sure where it is. I think that it is good for us to find out all we can about heaven though, since most of us - all of us - plan to spend time with God in this place that we call heaven.
Certainly the writer of Revelation, a man called John, thought a lot about heaven, and he had some real ideas about it. He often talked of the angels and their singing. He knew that there were other people there also. But most importantly, John knew that God was there, at work, making a place for you and me. It will be different from any place that we have known but it will also be the best place that we have ever lived. I hope that maybe you will take your angel or harp or whatever you think will be important for you to know about in heaven and then go home and find out with your parents everything that you can about this place called heaven. Remember, we all hope that someday we will live and share our lives together in heaven.
Would you like to take a cloud or angel cutout home? Good. I hope you will put them on your dresser so that you can think about our talk today.
