What Do You Do With Dust?

Object:
A dust-laden object. A dust rag. A half dozen or so small pieces of paper.
Purpose: To help children remember that we are all responsible for the kind of world we live in.
Material: A dust-laden object. A dust rag. A half dozen or so small pieces of paper.
Lesson: This morning I have something I want to show you. (A dust-laden object.) Do you know what we call this material that is on this (whatever your dusty object is)? ... Dust! What does your mother or father do with it? ... THEY WIPE IT AWAY. (Clean off your object.) Dust is always in the air around us. That is why we have little hairs in our nose so that the dust will be caught there and not enter our lungs. Since dust is always in the air, it will land on the surfaces around us and they will become very dusty unless someone takes the time to clean them off.
The dust reminds us of all the things that can mess life up. When something needs to be corrected or cleaned up or put away, someone has to do it or it will not get done. Can you imagine what a mess we would have here in church if every Sunday the people here just threw the bulletins on the floor and then no one picked them up during that week, and this happened week after week?
The same thing applies at home or out of doors. If we want things to look nice, if we want to be able to move about,
we need to do our part to remove the 'dust'' of life. And you can help. When you see something that needs to be put away or picked up, do it. Don't expect someone else to take care of it. When each person does his or her part, we will all live in a cleaner, nicer church and home and world.
Now, as you go back to your family, see if you can remember what I have just said. (Throw out pieces of paper to see if any of the children will pick them up.)
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
• When your child has failed to clean up after doing something messy.
• When you are housecleaning.
• When you are driving down a road where others have dumped garbage.
Scriptural Background: ''The heavens are the Lord's heavens, but the earth he has given to the sons of men'' (Psalm 115:16).
