Object: a street sign, some school books, and a fascimile of a food stamp voucher
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you have ever heard of the word taxes? (let them answer) What are taxes? (let them answer) Taxes are money that your parents pay for things that we use. We like to complain about taxes, and we always think that our taxes are too high and they cost too much, but they are something that we must have to keep our country running.
Let me show you some things that our taxes buy. (show them a street sign like 55 MPH or No Parking) How many of you have seen a sign like this when you are riding in the car? We call them street signs, and our taxes pay for these signs. We need these signs to keep the roads that we drive on safe for traffic. Our taxes also pay for the streets and roads that we travel on. Here is something else that our tax dollars buy. (hold up some school books) What are these? That's right; books. These are school books and our taxes pay for the books and for the schools that the books are used in. Everything in a school is paid for by taxes. Our taxes also buy help for people who need it because they are too poor or because they have a problem like being blind or deaf or injured so that they cannot work. Here is a food stamp voucher that our government uses to help people who cannot help themselves. People use food stamps instead of money to buy food at the grocery.
Our taxes are very important, and we elect people to choose how our taxes are to be used. The Bible says that people who work for the government and spend our tax money are chosen by God. They are a special kind of person whom the Bible says are like ministers. I wonder if you knew that the people that spend our taxes are called ministers by God? Most people do not know that, but it is true, and very important for us to remember. A minister of God must also remember that he or she was chosen by God to do the very best with the tax money so that the people who need help are getting it. Tax ministers must be sure that people who have special problems, such as a sickness, are cared for with our tax dollars. They must build good roads and fine schools so that we can travel safely and learn more happily about God's world.
The next time you hear someone talk about taxes, remember that God said he had chosen people to be ministers of our taxes and that our taxes should be used for everyone's good.
