Who Cleans You Up?

Matthew To Revelation
Object: a mop, a bucket, and a silver candlestick
Good morning, boys and girls, and how are you today? Did any of you tell anyone about Jesus this week? Some of you did tell others about him, didn't you? That's good. Jesus enjoys it when you tell others about the things that he did.
Today I want to show you a different kind of Jesus. Do you know what I have in my hands? (hold up the mop and bucket) That's right. I have an idea that Jesus might think he was like a mop or a bucket. (hold up the candlestick) Some people would like to think that Jesus was a fancy candlestick, but I think that Jesus would rather be a mop or a bucket. What do you think Jesus would like to think that he was? (let them answer) Jesus never reminds me of something fancy, even though he was the greatest man who ever lived. I never think of Jesus in some beautiful suit or eating in some fancy restaurant. Jesus is something else. One time, Jesus said that while the big shot ate at the table, he - Jesus - would probably be the one who was serving the man at the table. Jesus thought of himself as a servant to people. That is why I think Jesus reminds me of a mop or a bucket. Other people make the dirt, but Jesus cleans it up and makes it a good place to live.
Sometimes I see people walk down the street and throw away the paper from their gum or candy bar and it lands in the street. I think that Jesus would pick up that paper and put it in a trash can. Sometimes I hear people talking with kind of a dirty mouth trying to be funny. I think that Jesus never talked dirty, but instead he would take what was being said and clean it up.
That is the way that Jesus is to people. He cleans us up, and to do that he must work for us. That is why Jesus called himself a servant, and why I think that, if there is anything around the house that reminds me of Jesus, it is my mop and bucket. I know that Jesus is not a candlestick or something fancy like that in my house. Jesus came to serve people and save them from their sins. He also left us an example to follow.
If you want to be a follower of Jesus, then you must be more like the mop and bucket, and less like the candlestick, because to do the work of Jesus means doing the hard work of cleaning things up and not just sitting around looking pretty. That's what Jesus reminds me of. What is there around your house that makes you think of Jesus? I hope that you will think about it.
