Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you remember some special story about Jesus? (let them answer) What is your favorite story? (let a few of them tell you something they remember about Jesus) I am going to tell you a favorite story of mine about Jesus, and it is about a special day like Sunday. Sunday is very special to all of us. What do you do on Sunday? (let them answer) You go to church. What else do you do? (let them answer) You go to Sunday school, you have a big dinner after church, and you visit with your relatives. It is a special day. Some people think of Sunday as a special day because it is a time when they do not work like they work on other days of the week. There used to be laws that said that you could not work on Sunday and if you did work, you would be in big trouble. Did you ever think that you could get in trouble for working? Most of the time we get in trouble for not working.
One day Jesus was walking through a field where there was some food growing and since his disciples had not had anything to eat, they picked it and ate it. On any other day it would have been all right. But they did this on their Sunday and it was against the law. Some people saw them do it and they were very angry with them for breaking the law and they said so. Jesus told them to relax. God made the day of rest for us to use but he did not make it as a law so that we would be punished, or hurt by it.
Let me show you what I mean. We take medicine to help us when we are sick. If we use the medicine right, then we will get well. Medicine can be very good for us. But some people take the medicine when they are not sick. We call people who do this drug users. They make themselves sick because they are letting the medicine use them rather than them using it. Pills are meant to help us and not hurt us.
Jesus told the men who wanted to make Sunday a law, that they should remember why God made the day.
Sunday is God's day and it was made for us to use so that we would know God better. It is a time to love God and share our lives with him. It is not a time of law, but of love and we should use Sunday as a time when we can enjoy God in our life. Sunday makes our life better and never worse. The next time you see some pills remember how they are supposed to be used and not misused. The same thing is true about God's special day, Sunday. God made it for us as a special day to share with him and not as a law that should punish us.
