Verse: And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in [to the offering box] two mites, which make a farthing.
A neighbor was heard saying, "That dear lady lived on a widow's mite, but still she gave her heart and her mite to the Mission House. Her widow's mite was a tremendous service."
The person describing this woman was referring to the widow's mite that Jesus spoke of in the Bible. A mite is a very small amount of money, but this financial gift is tremendous when it is given through love and self-sacrifice.
Jesus sat in the Temple near the offering box and watched the people put in their money offering. Rich people were able to give large sums of money. The poor widow gave a farthing. A farthing was a coin equal to about one-fourth of a U.S. penny.
Jesus called his disciples and told them that this dear widow had put in more than all the others. Jesus said that the others gave out of their surplus wealth. But this poor widow, out of her poverty, had put in everything she had -- all she had to live on. She gave her whole being to God.
