The Sermon:
The book of Proverbs in the Old Testament of our Bible tells us many good ways to be wise. Wisdom is making good choices for our life to be happy. One of the ways to be wise is to learn. Where do you go to learn? Will you learn if you don't go where the teacher is? Will you learn if you don't listen? Will you learn if you don't follow directions and do the work? Will you learn if you don't accept correction? Accepting correction means being told we are wrong and then doing it over. We don't like being told we are wrong, but if we are going to learn, we must sometimes be told we are.
Proverbs 23:12 tells us, "Apply your mind to instruction and your ear to words of knowledge." *This is saying we should pay attention to our teacher and learn all we can. It is important to learn. Life is much better if we have knowledge.
Proverbs 15:32 says, "Those who ignore instruction despise themselves, but those who heed admonition gain understanding." This means that if we don't listen to our teacher, we are not being good to ourselves. If you do listen to your teacher, you are good to yourself and will be wise.
While we are thinking of a teacher and learning, let's remember that Jesus was the greatest teacher of all. Jesus teaches the things that are most important in the lives we live, and will make us happy. Everything else we learn will do us no good if we don't know how to be happy. Just as we learn from our teacher, we learn from Jesus to follow his directions, do the things he asks, accept correction, and realize that Jesus knows best. Where do we find this teaching of Jesus? In the Bible. Where can we go to hear his teaching? Sunday school and church. That is why it is important to attend regularly.
The other day, we were wondering if an owl is really a wise, old bird. Maybe he just looks wise because his eyes are large and on the front of his head. Other birds have eyes on the side of their heads.
Well, if he was really wise, he'd say, "A wise person with common sense will pay attention to the teacher and learn all they can."
Now a new year of school is starting and you can learn. Learn all you can. If there are any problems, pray and ask Jesus for help.
