Wonder Bread
Children's sermon
Children's Sermons A To Z
Exegetical Aim: The body is more than food.
Props: A loaf of bread (Wonder Bread if your region of the country sells it).
Lesson: Hold the loaf of bread before them. What do I have in my hands? (response) Can you tell me some of the things we make with bread? (response) That's right. What's your favorite thing you make with bread? (response) Peanut butter and jelly sandwich? That's my favorite too. What do we need in order to live? (bread) That's right, and why is bread important? (response) Bread is food, and we need food for energy. What else do we need in order to live? (response) Possible answers are water, clothes, etc. Try to draw these ideas out of them, and talk to them about why these are important.
If one of the children guesses early where you are headed, then use that thought for the following discussion. As important as food and water and clothes and houses are, we need more than this to live. Can someone tell me what else we need besides food, water, clothes, and a home? (response) It will be great if you get something spiritually related but, if not, then suggest something. Do we need our parent's love in order to live? (response) What about the lessons they teach us? (response) What kind of lessons do they teach you? (response) Do your parents teach you what an A and a B and a C look like? (response) What else do they teach you? (response) Do they tell you not to hit and not to tell any fibs? (response) You know we need to be taught how to behave.
Application: So, you see, we don't live by bread alone hold up the bread or by water alone. We also need to be taught how to live. We need to be taught to be kind and to tell the truth. Your moms and dads know this because God told them not to live by bread alone. They need to listen to God in order to live. It is God who tells us not to lie and to be kind to one another. You see, it takes a lot more than just bread to live. We need to listen to our parents, and we need to listen to God.
Let's Pray: Lord, give us your Word. We know that we cannot live simply by eating bread and food. We must have your Word to live. Amen.

Lent 1
Romans 10:8b--13
On Your Lips
Exegetical Aim: To show that the good news should always be on our lips.
Props: Some pennies (enough for each child to keep one) and a Polaroid camera.
Lesson: Today I want to show you a new game. It's called "Balance the Penny." Would you like to play? (response) Hold a penny in your outstretched hand. It's easy to balance a penny, don't you think? I'm doing it easily. Would you like to try? (response) Give each child a penny, and instruct them to hold them very still in their hands. Good job! You are balancing the penny. Okay, let's make it a little harder. Can you balance it on your index finger? Demonstrate by placing the penny on the tip of your finger. Good job! You can do that too. Okay, here's the hardest one. Now I want you to be very quiet for this one. Can you all close your mouths really tight? Can you balance the penny on your ... lips? Do like this. Demonstrate, and encourage the children to do it. Once they have it, begin to talk to them again. Keep balancing them. Don't stop, even though your faces are really funny right now. While you are talking to them, reach over quietly and get out the Polaroid camera, then quickly take a picture of them with their funny faces. Now instruct the children to hold tightly to their pennies, and not to play with them anymore. Wow, did you have funny faces with your lips sticking out and the pennies sticking out! Let the children see the picture.
Application: The Apostle Paul knew that if something was on our lips that it was easy to see. As a matter of fact, he said, "The Word is near you, in your heart and on your lips." Paul was saying that the words of Jesus should be on our lips. That way God's word will be easy to see. We should always be willing to tell people what we know about Jesus, so that they can see him. But some people just want to hold what they have. They grab hold of it and try to hide it, just like you are doing with your penny right now. No one can see or hear about Jesus from them. That's sad, isn't it? So where does God want us to put the words of Jesus? In our hands where no one can see them, or on our lips where everyone can see them? (response) Yes, on our lips. I want you to take the penny home with you, and whenever you see it, you can remember to keep the word of God on your lips.
Let's Pray: Thank you, God, for teaching us that we should always have your Word on our lips, and be willing to share the good news of Jesus with everyone. Amen.
