Object:
A picture of all your family together. Pieces of cardboard for making a picture frame. (Two pieces for each child.) A sample frame into which you have placed your picture.
Purpose: To think about what it means to be a part of a family.
Material: A picture of all your family together. Pieces of cardboard for making a picture frame. (Two pieces for each child.) A sample frame into which you have placed your picture.
Special Preparation: Make a sample to show. Two pieces of light cardboard can be used to make the frame. Decide on the size of the photo to be used and cut out a slightly smaller opening in the middle of one piece of cardboard. This piece can be colored or covered with a fabric. The second piece of cardboard will serve as the back.
Lesson: This morning I have a special picture I want to show you. Last summer, all my children were home at one time and all their children were with us, too. We had our picture taken and here you can see my wife and my children and my grandchildren. (Use whatever family picture you have and tell the story about how the picture was taken.)
Now, suppose something nice happens to one of the people in the picture. What effect do you think it would have on the other people in our family? ... (They would be happy.) And suppose something unpleasant happened to one of the people in this picture. What effect do you think that would
have upon the other people in the family? ... (They would be sad.)
You see, we sometimes forget that we belong to a family and what happens to us affects the other people in our family. Also, what we do within the family affects everyone else. For example: if you like to live in a nice, clean house, and you see a piece of paper on the floor, that you did not drop, what should you do? ... (If you want a clean house, and you are part of the family, you should pick it up.)
Today I want to give you the material needed to make a picture frame like the one I have around my picture. You may need someone in your family to help you. I would like you to put a picture of your family in that frame so that it will remind you that you are a part of a special group of people. Remember, you belong to a group of people who love you and we want you to do your part to make your home a happy place to live.
Possible Times To Use This Illustration In The Home:
• When siblings are not getting along with each other.
• When looking at family photographs; or when you receive a family picture from a friend or relative.
• When you have been to a wedding or funeral. Comment on how important it is for the family to be together at such a time.
Scriptural Background: ''When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled'' (John 11:33).
