To You, O LORD, I Call
Devotional
Companion to the Psalter
A Devotional Guide to the Psalms
Object:
Do not drag me away with the wicked ...
they do not regard the works of the LORD,
or the work of his hands ...
O save your people, and bless your heritage;
be their shepherd, and carry them forever.
-- Psalm 28:3a, 5a, 9
Theme: A cry for help and a thanksgiving for it
Outline
1-2 -- Urgent plea for God to hear and speak.
3-5 -- Do not treat me as you must with the wicked.
6-7 -- Thanks and praise for answered prayer.
8-9 -- Concluding intercession for the people.
Notes
• Lament
• Verse 4 is not a plea for revenge but for God to end their evil doing. The revelation of God shows him as one who mercifully breaks down (judges) the evil in order to redeem and rebuild.
• Unbelief (practical atheism) is the root of the evil doings (v. 5).
For Reflection
• Is this simple but great confession of faith (v. 7) also the resolve of my heart?
Prayer
O God, if you were silent to us, we would be on that downward slope. But you speak to us in your Word, our Lord Jesus Christ. Continue to shepherd us and carry us to joy and exultation in you forever. Amen.
