You Shall Know They Are Mothers By Their Love
Children's sermon
Children's Sermons A To Z
Exegetical Aim: A person's beliefs and who he/she is, is evident by one's actions. Key verses: 34--35. This may be used for Mother's Day also.
Props: A clock (big face with second hand), a stuffed animal (dog), and a photo of one of the children's moms.
Lesson: Good morning! (response) I have a few things to show you this morning and I want you to tell me what they are. Hold up the clock. What is this? (response) It's a clock? (response) How do you know it's a clock? (it has numbers, hands) Let's be really quiet and see if we can hear anything. What is that sound? (ticking) Is that what a chicken does? Does a chicken tick? (response) What ticks? (response) So you're sure this a clock? (response) Okay.
Hold up the dog. Now, I know what this is, this is a hippopotamus. (no, it's a dog) It's a dog? How do you know this is a dog? (response) Their response may be descriptive of a hippo as well. Well, a hippo has four legs, a nose, ears, and a tail and a little bit of hair. Are you sure this is a dog? (response) Can you make the sound of a dog? (response) Okay, I believe you. This is a dog!
Hold up the photo of the mom. What is this? (photo, Mrs. _____________, my mom) A mom? Who said this was a mom? (response) How many of you have moms? (response) How do you know it's a mom? What does a mom do? (response) One hopes they will say a few emotional things like love and care; if not lead them in that direction. You know I have a mom and she hugs me. Does your mom hug you? (response) What does she say to you when she hugs you? (response) How does she show her love for you? (response)
Application: Do you know what a disciple is? (no) A disciple is a follower of Jesus. Quickly hold up each item as you ask the following questions. Now, how do you know this is a clock? (response) How do you know this is a dog? (response) And how do you know this is a mom? (response) How do you know a Christian? (response) Listen to this: Jesus said, "You will know they are disciples by their love for one another."
Application For Mother's Day: Do you know what today is? (Mother's Day) Yes, this is mom's special day. She deserves a special day because she does so much for us. And just the way a mom loves and hugs and cares for us is how we should act as followers of Jesus. Jesus said if we are his followers - his disciples - we will love and care for one another. So next time you see someone loving and caring for somebody, it could be a mom but it just might be a follower of Jesus.
Let's Pray: Lord, everyone will know we are Christians by our love for one another. Help us to love. Amen.

Easter 5
Acts 11:1--18
A Blanket Of Specialness
Exegetical Aim: To teach that God makes only special things.
Props: A sheet or a tablecloth and three other items (two very pretty items, and one very plain and worn item that has special significance to you. For instance, I will use a crystal dish, a piece of china, and an old football.) Wrap the three things in the tablecloth (sheet) and hold the tablecloth in a bundle.
Lesson: Today, I want to lay some things on the ground for you to see. But they are so special to me that I want them to remain on this sheet. Would you like to see them? (response) Can you guess what is inside? Open the sheet enough for only one item to be seen. The first item that I want you to see is this pretty crystal dish. See how it shines in the light? And I can put candy or mints in the dish. Don't you think it's pretty? (response) Don't you think it's special? (response) Now do the same with the china. Make sure that you include the question, "Don't you think it's special?"
I said that there are three items that I wanted to lay on the blanket to show you because they are very special to me. Why is this first dish special? (response) Yes, because it's pretty and shiny. And why is this piece of china special? (response) Right, because it is pretty, too. Now let me show you the third thing, which is very, very special. It's so special that I always take care of it, and I always know where it is. Are you ready to see it? (response) Open the blanket to reveal the football. What's the matter? Don't you think that this football is as nice as the other two things? Why not? (response)
You see, I got this football ten years ago just after I got married. It has a lot of scars and is worn because it has been played with so much. It has been on church trips, and family trips, and has been the cause of a lot of good memories for me. So that is why this old beat up football is as special to me as these really pretty things.
Application: The Bible has a story that tells about how God showed Peter a blanket like this one with a lot of things on it, but Peter didn't think that the things on the blanket were special. But God told Peter that whatever he creates cannot be called anything but special. Open up the sheet all the way, and have the children sit on it. And guess what? God created you, and you are special, too. Just like this old football that doesn't look important but is because of what it means to me. We all are special to God no matter what we look like because we are his children. Turn to the congregation. And I want to show you all something that is very special that I have on my sheet today. Ask the congregation to respond by saying "Amen," then turn back to the children. You see, they think that you're special, too.
Let's Pray: Oh, God, thank you for making us. And thank you for loving us no matter who we are or what we look like. Amen.
