Call To Worship
Leader: Sometimes we find ourselves set down in the middle of a valley filled with dry bones.
Men: Our ideas have turned to dust.
Women: Our marketable attributes have shriveled.
Leader: Then something takes hold of this hopelessness and turns it around.
Men: A new idea fascinates us. We begin again to thrive.
Women: We recognize valuable talents that take us in a new direction.
All: The very spirit of life reconnects within us.
Leader: Is this not also the spirit of Pentecost? Is this not God active in our lives as Holy Spirit? Is this not God-with-us-always?
Collect
Whether we sit down surrounded by dried-out bones or step among them, you are with us, O God, bringing us to reality, staying with us, and meeting our inner conversation with these words, "You shall live." You breathe vitality into our very being. We are alive again. All praise to you, O living, ever-creating God. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Those times we become so disjointed within ourselves and so disconnected with those around us that all vitality drains from us, bring us to reality, O God. Spirit of God, descend upon our hearts. You, alone, know whether we can live fully. Tell us in ways we can hear that with you in our lives, our dry bones can know new life. Amen.
36B Hymns
"Spirit Of The Living God" Tune: LIVING GOD
"Spirit Of God, Descend Upon My Heart" Tune: MORECAMBE
"Every Time I Feel The Spirit" Tune: AFRICAN-AMERICAN SPIRITUAL
The Day Of Pentecost
Second Lesson: Romans 8:22-27
Theme: Like A Deep Sigh
Call To Worship
On Pentecost, God came blowing as the rushing wind of Holy Spirit into the hearts of Jesus' disciples. Like a sigh too deep for words, God comes as Holy Spirit whispering hope into our amazed and waiting hearts. Come into the presence of God.
Collect
We need not be concerned about framing perfectly worded prayers to you, O God, for you know the direction of our hearts. A stumbled few words, a change of posture, an acknowledgement within the soul -- you know when we are at prayer and ready to listen and hope. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
There are times, God, when all we can do is hope patiently. We know well our weaknesses of body and spirit. We come with a sigh too deep for words to you, O gracious One, and you, who searches our heart, meet it with your own deep sigh. And we cease to be alone with our patient hoping. Thank you, Holy Spirit. Amen.
36B Hymns
"Come, O Spirit, With Your Sound" Tune: BOUNDLESS MERCY or ST. KEVIN
"Let Every Christian Pray" Tune: LAUDES DOMINI
"I'm Goin'a Sing When The Spirit Says Sing" Tune: I'M GOIN'A SING
The Day Of Pentecost
Gospel: John 15:26-27; 16:4b-15
Theme: Are You Here, God?
Call To Worship
Come into the presence of God. Know that God is. Cherish our capacity to move beyond concepts of God that limit or diminish the Creator. Embrace the gift of the Holy Spirit sent to us. Let us worship God in spirit and in truth.
Collect
We do not always recognize you, God, as we grow beyond our earlier ideas about you. Then, there you are, more deeply present in Spirit than possible in human form. We praise you, ever-changing, ever-the-same, eternal, present Creator. Amen.
Prayer Of Confession
Leader: Are you here, God,
People: In the limbo of indecision and uncertainty?
Leader: Are you here, God,
People: In the changes when we feel completely on our own?
Leader: Are you here, God,
People: In the scary in-between times when we most need you to champion our efforts?
Leader: Are you here, God, when we need you?
36B Hymns
"Come, O Spirit, Dwell Among Us" Tune: EBENEZER
"O Come And Dwell In Me" Tune: ST. MICHAEL
"Surely The Presence Of The Lord" Tune: WOLFE
