Compassionate God...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Compassionate God, you are so much more understanding and forgiving and compassionate than I am. When people deliberately flout the most basic rules and bring the Church into disrepute, I feel angry and hurt and humiliated and indignant all at the same time. I want those people to be punished for the pain they inflict on the rest of us, and on you. But you continue to love and to understand and to forgive. Your humility passes all understanding. Compassionate God, forgive my rigid intolerance which I perpetrate in your name. Give me the courage to reach out in understanding and openness to those whom I find at fault. And give me the humility to recognise my own sins before I begin to point out other people's sins.
Compassionate God, you are so much more understanding and forgiving and compassionate than I am. Forgive my rigid intolerance and stir up in me the courage to reach out in understanding and openness. And give me the humility to recognise my own sins before I recognise sin in others.
Compassionate God, it's difficult for your Church to both demonstrate love and keep good order within its ranks. Overlooking faults and failures may seem to be loving, but actually be a failure to love. Yet condemning faults and failures may be very judgemental. Help members of your Church to be aware of their own motives and actions, and to learn to identify truly loving actions which help their own and other people's growth.
With Christians across the world we pray especially today for your Church in Nigeria with Archbishop Peter Akinola, and your Church in Borg, Norway, with Bishop Ole Kvarame.

Compassionate God, seeking the highest good for all humanity often clashes with self-seeking for one particular country or group of people. Give our leaders the wisdom and the desire to always work towards the best interests of all human beings. May they be closely concerned with less fortunate members of our world, and may they seek always that which is best for our planet as well as humanity.

Compassionate God, good order is essential for any community to flourish, and so we pray that our own community may be well ordered. Pour your blessings upon all those who lead our community, especially those in positions of responsibility on the parish council or in the Church. May we all be aware of the opportunities our own community gives us to learn to love all human beings, and may we desire to practise that love here, where we live.

Compassionate God, we are concerned for those in our community who are sick, and for those who care for them. We hold them within the sunshine of your love, knowing that your touch will heal. And so we ask you to pour your love into and over and round and through those we name before you ...

Compassionate God, we ask your strength for those who have recently been bereaved of someone they love. Support them, hold them, and pour your love into them, that they may feel your warmth and respond to your love. May they know that love never dies, and that their loved ones are even now living and loving with you. We name them before you ... and those who continue to grieve over a previous death at this time of year...
