Dear God
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Dear God, it's all very well talking about inner authority and dying for what you know to be right, but things are rarely so clear cut in my life. Those in authority always have good reasons to justify their every action, and it's difficult to deny those reasons, even if I have the uneasy feeling they may be wrong. And I'm only me, someone with no authority, no standing in life. Surely it would not only be presumption of the highest order, but also downright sinful for me to stand against authority?
Dear God, help me to unravel the unfathomable. Help me to see my way straight so that I cease to use authority as an excuse to take no action or thought whatsoever. Give me the courage to express my views and feelings, even if I have to stand alone against the full weight of human authority.

Dear God, sometimes your Church doesn't appear to be entirely joyful. Sometimes it groans under the weight of its own authority and self-importance. Help us who are members of your Church to recognise that we are the Church and that we decide its joy or its depression, its thankfulness or its complaints. Help us to pray without ceasing so that if questions of obeying or defying authority arise, we can be sure of your guidance. With Christians world-wide we pray especially today for your Church in West Africa with Archbishop Robert Okine and your Church in Sodor and Man (UK) with Bishop Noel Jones.

Dear God, human authority and power are so often abused that it's easy to become cynical about politics. May we remember to pray regularly for all our politicians both locally and nationally, and for the leaders of other countries. Give to all of those in authority your inner strength and wisdom, so that they may make courageous and sensible decisions. And if any are in danger of abusing their position, pull them up before they stray from the straight and narrow path. We pray especially today for...

Dear God, be with any in our community who are falling into debt because of the cost of Christmas. Help them to plan wisely and well, and for their preparations to be such that they enjoy Christmas. We pray for our schools and children as they produce their Christmas entertainment for us, and ask that all who attend carol services or plays may come away feeling they've been touched by you.
