Ever-Present God
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Ever-present God, I find that my thoughts and moods and behaviour are all coloured by what's going on in my life, and by my childhood experiences. But I seldom recognise the connections until later. Ever-present God, help me to avoid blaming other people and other situations for the way I feel and react. Remind me that even Jesus was affected by the circumstances in his life, but that he retained his own integrity right through the end and thus experienced new life and resurrection.
Ever-present God, sometimes new cults seem much more exciting than your more traditional Church. May your Church be so close to you that your people are able to experience the excitement of a close relationship with you within the boundaries of your Church. May your Church work hard in your name, but save us from working so hard that we never find time to sit and talk to you or listen to you.
With Christians world-wide we pray especially today for the Church of Ireland in Armagh, with their Bishop Brian Hannon.
Ever-present God, sometimes it seems as though we humans are anxious to hasten the end of the world. For some in America and some in Afghanistan, the end of the world has already come, and maybe the evil of terrorism has ended the world as we know it. Ever-present God, while we condemn evil in others, help us to open our eyes and become aware of how we might have unconsciously contributed to that evil. And help us to repent, that the world might become a better place for all human beings.
Today we pray especially for ....
Ever-present God, we pray for our own community here in .... Enable us to pay due attention to any signs which warn us of danger, but enable us also to rise above negative thoughts which might damage our community. May we work always for the good of our community, but may we read the signs correctly so that we know what sort of work our community needs. And may we take enough time out to ensure that we don't burn out through accumulated stress.
Today we pray especially that ....
Ever-present God, remind those who are sick that you are always with them. Take fear away from those who are approaching the end of their lives, and may they be very aware of your strong and comforting presence. Touch the untouchables with love, and touch the sick with healing, that all may know your power to heal and to save.
Today we pray especially for ...
Ever-present God, we hold within your warm and sacred presence those who have lost someone they love, either recently or in previous years at this time. May they feel your strong arms around them, and may they draw comfort from the knowledge that their loved ones are with you in the great Communion of Saints.
We remember especially before you today ....
We ask all these prayers through his name, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
