God Of Humility...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
God of humility, When your active life was taken away and you hung passively and painfully on a cross, you bore it in humility and witnessed through your the nature of your being. Help me to realise that there is more to me than my work or my position, that the nature of my being matters to you, and that you affirm me as I am. Remove my resentments and jealousies, and give me the strength and humility of John the Baptist, that where necessary I may decrease in order that others may increase.
God of humility, may your Church work together for good to those who love you. May we celebrate talented leaders but avoid the pitfalls they might bring by keeping our eyes always firmly fixed upon you. Enable us all to step back when necessary so that others might be encouraged to develop their own gifts, and give us the humility to help and applaud that process.
Today we pray especially for your Church in Oulu, Finland, and Bishop Olavi Rimpilainen,
God of humility, our nations so often act out of self-interest, forgetting that we are all human beings together. Enable our leaders to choose Christ's option for the poor, so that all human beings may enjoy a sufficient life-style with good food, good medical aid and proper work. May those who are prisoners be treated with the respect due to all humanity, and may punishments veer towards rehabilitation rather than vengeance.
We pray today for ....
God of humility, enable us Christians to act as salt within our own community. May we reveal your light to a dark world. May we be always ready to offer support and friendship in love without falling into the trap of indulgence. And may we recognise our own limitations so that we offer what we can without laziness but without trying to be superhuman. Help us to enable the gifts of others instead of trying to do everything ourselves, and free us from inauthentic guilt when we fail our own high standards.
In our own community we pray especially today for....
God of humility, we hold before you those who are sick, asking for your healing touch. Use our prayers to open channels to them as we name them before you.... Strengthen those who care for them, and give appropriate skills to those who treat them professionally.
God of humility, we name before you those who have died recently ... and recommend to your loving care the friends and relations they leave behind them. may those who are in the depths of sorrow glimpse your light at the end of their tunnel and know that there is always resurrection after the pain and sorrow of suffering. We commend to your loving arms too those who continue to grieve over loved ones who died at this time in previous years....
We ask these prayers through the King of humility, Jesus the suffering servant.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
