God Of Love, You Promised To Comfort Those Who Mourn...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ says to all who truly turn to him:
"Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest."
"For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life."
God of love, you promised to comfort those who mourn. You promised that through your comforting presence, they would be greatly blessed. We claim that promise now. Give your strength to all those who mourn, that they might endure through this time of pain. As you share their grief, help them to shoulder their burdens, and carry for them any load which is too heavy to bear.
God of love, in this Easter season with all its memories of pain and death, we remember all those who have gone before us and now rest in the sleep of peace. Those who gave their lives that we might live in peace and freedom. Those who were so close to you that their lives shone. Those who gave us music and art and mathematics and science. We rejoice in the company of all these people, knowing that the community of saints remains unbroken. And knowing that we too share in that community.
God of love, we bring into your presence with us all those who are sick, and all who anxiously watch over them. Lay your healing hands upon the sick, that they may be filled with your life-giving power. We pray for those we name in our own hearts, and for ...
God of love, we pray for those people who suffer because of human violence. Those who must live lives of fear in war zones. Those who are abused because they are too small or too weak to defend themselves. Those who are always hungry because they are too far away for the rest of humanity to care very much.
God of love, we thank you that through your son Jesus Christ, you have shared in all human emotions. You have experienced each stage of grief through which we must pass. And you have shown us that suffering faced always results in resurrection, in this life as well as in the life to come. We pray that all those who suffer might be aware of your loving presence with them, that they might be guided and drawn towards their own experience of resurrection.
God of love, we thank you especially for the lives of those we love who have died either recently or in previous years. Thank you for all they have meant to us. For times of fun and laughter. For happy memories. For times of shared sadness. Thank you for their example and for their continued life in your presence after death. We remember them before you now (as we a light a candle to remember each one.)
We ask all our prayers in the name of your dear son Jesus Christ, who died, but rose again to new life.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
