God Of Mystery
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
God of mystery, I never know when to expect you, or what to expect from you. Just when I'm sitting comfortably and life is pleasantly smooth, you surprise me with unexpected (and sometimes unwelcome) thoughts. You ask of me things I'd rather not do. You expect me to be completely honest both with other people and with myself, and that's difficult.
God of mystery, it's much more comfortable to keep you at arm's length. But it's catch 22, for then I won't be ready to receive you and I'll miss out on so much of the love you're longing to pour over and into me. God of mystery, help me to use this Advent season to prepare for your light to enter me. And then give me the courage to respond to that light.

God of mystery, when we're tempted to despair over the state of your Church today, remind us that you have a way of redeeming even the most hopeless situations. As we enter a new year with the Church help us to see not the darkness of failure but the light of Christ, and help us all so to dedicate ourselves to you that we respond to your call to us.
With Christians world-wide we pray especially today for your Church in Nigeria with Archbishop Joseph Adetiloye and your Church in Ripon and Leeds (UK) with Bishop John Packer.

God of mystery, our world is dark with foreboding. We face wars and destruction and violence. We live with hunger for many, pollution and the stripping of all our natural resources. We clamour for your light in our darkness and we beseech you to turn the hearts of human beings towards yourself. Help us all to respond as you would have us respond, and to follow your guidance wherever you may lead. We pray especially today for...

God of mystery, we pray for those in live in surroundings which drag them down. Be with those who are so poor that they look at illegal ways of supplementing their income. Be with those who are beguiled by false promises into a depraved way of life. Be with those who are restless and searching for excitement in unhealthy ways. Bring light to all these lives and call Christians to help. In our own community we pray especially today for ...

God of mystery, we commend to your healing touch those who are sick, knowing that you can use our prayers to heal. May those who are sick hold onto your light in their darkness. Help us to show our concern in practical ways and to support the carers. We name before you those whom we ask you to heal...

God of mystery, as this Advent season begins we pray especially for those whose lives are in the darkness of despair because someone they love has died recently, or because they remember a previous death at this time of year. May they know in the depths of their being that your light is waiting for them at the end of their tunnel, ready to guide them into happier times. We name them before you ...
