God of rest and quietness, sometimes I feel overwhelmed by the sheer needs of so many people. Sometimes I respond by total inertia, but at other times I work myself to a frazzle. God of rest and quietness, help me to know when to say no. Help to realise when I'm simply indulging myself through my "helping" and when I'm actually some use to other people. Help me to give myself permission to rest, and show me what recreation and delight there is in a retreat, especially when I discover you all over again.

God of Creation, the Church is your body, your eyes and ears, your hands and feet. Help your Church to discern the different needs of your people, and to offer those people what they need. And help your Church to retain a sense of humour, especially about itself. Today with the world-wide church we pray especially for your Church in Nigeria led by Archbishop Peter Akinola, giving thanks for the rapid growth of the Church there.

God of justice, when governments try to respond to the needs of the people, they can become overwhelmed and thus defensive and inefficient. We hold in your presence all those engaged in public service both locally, nationally and internationally, asking that they may take sufficient rest and relaxation to refresh themselves, and receive from you the wisdom and the discernment they need.

God of compassion, none of us are quite whole. We all carry memories which hurt, we're all scarred in some way, and we all need your healing touch. Touch especially any relationships which need restoring or renewing, and take from us the burden of unforgiveness. Give us courage to face our own past and the strength to receive your healing.

May they feel your arms around them, giving them the strength and support and love they need.
