Understanding And Loving God...
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ
Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority
The local community
Those who suffer
The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy
Hear our prayer
Lord, hear us.
Lord, graciously hear us.
Understanding and loving God, suppose I plumb the depths of my inner being and discover I'm a really wicked and evil person? Suppose if I remove all my arbitrarily added restraints, I discover I'm violently angry or jealous or uncontrollably passionate? Loving God, I'm scared to be me, because if I don't make a constant and conscious effort to be good, I might be very bad. Help me to trust you, my inner Advocate, to such an extent that I can begin to dare to be me, can begin to risk experiencing my real self, so that You within me, can develop and expand and fill my being.
Understanding and loving God, help me to dare to begin to explore my inner self so that your Holy Spirit within me can develop and expand and fill my being.
Understanding and loving God, you are so close to all human beings that you are within them. Help your Church to enable your Holy Spirit to grow within the Church. May we never crush your Spirit through our insistent adherence to tradition, but may we be anxious to expand and develop by discovering your power. Help your Church not to fera your Holy Spirit, but to welcome you and embrace you and reach out to others through your Spirit.
With the world-wide Church we pray especially today for Kenya with Archbishop David Gitari, and for Moray, Ross and Caithness (Scotland) with Bishop Michael Crook.

Understanding and loving God, at this rogationtide we pray for those countries where the crops fail because of adverse weather conditions or because of poor soil and primitive farming methods. May we who always have a harvest be willing to share our bounty with those who have little or no food. And as crops are planted, so we ask for your blessing on those crops and on all who work the land in whichever way and whichever country.

Understanding and loving God, in our modern life the food we eat sometimes seems remote from the fields because we tend to buy it already prepared and wrapped. Remind us of our debt to farmers and our reliance on the soil and the weather. Remind us too of those such as fishermen who daily risk their lives so that we may eat, and enable us to be truly grateful for our food.

Understanding and loving God, we pray for the sick, especially if they feel that life is unfair. May they find you through their suffering, and may they experience your love through the loving care of those around them. We name before you ...
