Welcoming God
Intercession
Prayers usually include these concerns and may follow this sequence:
The Church of Christ Creation, human society, the Sovereign and those in authority The local community Those who suffer The communion of saints
These responses may be used:
Lord, in your mercy Hear our prayer Lord, hear us. Lord, graciously hear us.
Welcoming God,
You allow us the freedom to do our own thing. When we want to travel far away, you let us go. When we want to take with us all the riches you have given us, you allow us to do so with no strings attached. When we use those riches for the wrong purposes, you allow us the space to come to our senses in our own time. And when we return to you, you bring a new creation out of our sin and dross.
Cleanse your Church, and bring a new creation out of our sinfulness. Draw us so close to you that we never again wish to stray. May we be so aware of the riches you offer us that we are always eager to stay and taste them. Today we ask especially that....
Bring back those governments and cultures which have strayed from you. May the people become so aware of spiritual beauty, that they insist on enjoying that beauty within their own culture. May we reject pornography and deceit, greed and selfishness and pride, and turn instead towards the fruits of your Spirit. We pray especially today for....
Help young parents to understand priorities, and to get their values straight. Enable society to realise that much of our true wealth lies in our human resources, and that each human being is of infinite worth. May we begin to place huge value on bringing up our children to be good and responsible members of society, and may we teach them, as far as in us lies, to know and love you.
Nourish the sick, that they may recover full health and strength. May those who are dying feel your presence very near, and know that there is nothing to fear, but that their full healing lies beyond the grave. May they remember that after Jesus died, he was seen again alive and in perfect health, and that he promised the same for all of us.
Comfort those who grieve, and see them safely through their time of mourning. May they grow through their pain and become very aware of your presence with them, knowing that after death, you wait to welcome every human being. And may we all so grow to love you that we are able to respond to that welcome when the time comes.
Merciful Father,
Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.
