Aim to please God
Children's sermon
Object:
Baseball hat or baseball ball
Good morning, boys and girls. How many of you like to play
baseball? (Let them answer.) What is your favorite team? (Let
them answer.) I'm wearing a hat from my favorite team (or, I
brought a baseball with me this morning) because baseball reminds
me of this morning's lesson.
In baseball, if you are a pitcher you stand on the mound and throw the ball at the batter. Pitchers aim to make the batter strike out. If you are the batter you stand at home plate. Batters aim to hit the ball. If you stand on one of the bases you try to catch balls. A baseman aims to get the runner out. Everyone on a baseball team has something to aim for -- a good pitch, a good hit, or getting someone out.
I want to tell you about a man named Paul, who wrote this morning's Bible lesson. He wrote a letter to Christians. In his letter he tells Christians what we should aim for. Paul says that we should aim to please God. That sounds like a good thing to aim for. How do you please God? Let me tell you three things you can do this week to please God. First, you can become a follower of Jesus. Second, you can do what Jesus wants you to do. Third, when you say your prayers at night thank Jesus for all the good things in your life.
The next time you see someone wearing a baseball cap, or playing baseball, think of Jesus. Remember that in baseball every player aims to do something. As a Christian we all aim to do something, too. We aim to please God. We please God when we decide to follow Jesus, do what Jesus wants us to do, and remember to thank Jesus in our prayers.
