The miracle of working together
Children's sermon
Object:
a white cane (if possible, a blind person's white cane)
Good morning, boys and girls. Is there anyone here who is perfect? (let them answer) I have a friend who uses this cane. Do you know why he uses this kind of cane? (let them answer) That's right, he's blind. Do you think he is perfect? (let them answer)
I have another friend who wears hearing aids. Why do people wear hearing aids? (let them answer) That's right, to help them hear better. Many people wear glasses because they can't see or read without them. As we get older we need medicine for our hearts, our stomachs, and even our brains. Not one of us is perfect. My blind friend who uses this cane to walk is very good friends with the man who cannot hear. The blind man hears the horn honking and the deaf man sees the car coming. They are both very safe when they are together.
Why would God create people with these problems? If you were God would you create people who were blind or deaf? Would the people you create have problems with their hearts or brains? (let them answer)
Someone asked Jesus if the reason a man was born blind was because he or his parents had sinned. Jesus said neither the blind man nor his parents had sinned. The man was born blind so God could show all that he could do for the blind man.
If all of us were perfect we would not need one another. It brings us closer to God when we need each other. We know that God is perfect and that God has a plan for each one of us. Many times blind people can hear much better than people with good vision. Some blind people have dogs that lead them and they become very close.
I know a man who has to use crutches to stand up and walk a short distance. His friend is a man who lived alone but had a car to drive. Now they work together. The man with crutches gets to ride in his friend's car, and the man with the car now shares his friend's house.
God creates a miracle when doctors, nurses, scientists, and people who give money to build hospitals all work together. The miracle is a blind man receiving his sight or a deaf man being able to hear.
God opens our hearts and gives us many ways to be a part of his great world. You don't have to be perfect, you just need to love God and he will make things work for you.
