Be Prepared!
Children's sermon
Object:
a day planner and your Bible
The Point: Always be ready to meet Jesus.
The Lesson: Good morning children. Thank you for sharing this time with me.
This morning I brought my day planner and my Bible. Who knows what a planner is? (get responses) My planner is a very important part of my busy life. When I schedule a meeting or set a time to meet someone, I put it in my planner. When there is something really important for me to get done in the future, I put reminders of the coming deadline weeks ahead so that I can be prepared. I also use my planner as a reminder of people I meet and don't want to forget. I write their names on the day I meet them. And when I promise that I will pray for someone, I make a note of it in my planner.
At the end of every day, I review my planner for the next day and the days to come. My planner doesn't do the preparations, but it reminds me to be prepared.
I have another planner, and it is a planner that you have too. It is my Bible. The Bible continually reminds me to get ready, to be prepared. We are to be faithful in our prayers and learning about Jesus. We are to continually watch for him to return to us. But we don't know when he will come so that means we need to always be ready.
In our lesson today, Jesus reminds us of the need to be ready through a story about some young women. They are waiting for a wedding party to start. But five women weren't prepared; they ran out of oil for their lamps. They missed the wedding party.
When I look at my day planner, I am reminded to prepare for the next day. When I read the Bible and hear this story, I am reminded to prepare for Jesus' return. Because I don't know when Jesus will return, I need to be prepared every day: looking for him, praying to him, and treating others like he would.
Our Bible says to always be ready to meet Jesus. Then we won't miss out on the party.
Closing Prayer: Let us pray that Jesus will help us to be ready for his return. Lord Jesus, sometimes we get so busy we forget to watch for you, pray to you, or worship you. When we forget, we are not preparing for your coming again. Help us all, Jesus, to keep watch so that we might celebrate your return and join in the party. Amen.
