The Christian uniform
Children's sermon
Object:
some kind of uniform
"Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." (vv. 34b-35)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Can anyone tell what I've brought with me today? (show uniform; allow answers) This is a uniform. Who knows what a uniform is? (allow answers) A uniform is something that people wear so they look the same as other people. When might you wear a uniform? (allow answers) Sometimes you have to wear a uniform to your school. People have to wear uniforms to work. When someone at a store is wearing a uniform, you know you can ask questions or ask for help. People who are on teams often wear uniforms so they can tell who is on which team. Who do you know that has to wear a uniform? (allow answers) What different parts of the uniform are there? (allow answers) Uniforms come in all shapes, colors, and sizes. Maybe your uniform is a special baseball cap, a button-down shirt, slacks, and dress shoes. In a choir, the uniform is usually a long robe. People in the military also wear uniforms.
Did you know that as Christians we also have a uniform? (allow answers) We sure do! Do you all have your uniform on? (allow answers) Tell me what you are wearing that shows you are a Christian. (allow answers) You don't have a Christian uniform? Oh, yes, you do! Here's a hint: It's not something that you wear, like clothes or a hat. Instead, this Christian uniform is on the inside. Do you know what it is yet? (allow answers)
Our Bible verse tells us what the Christian uniform is. In the verse, Jesus is talking to his disciples. Jesus says: "Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another."
Love is the Christian uniform! People wear uniforms so that other people can tell what kind of job they have or what school or team they belong to. When we show love for one another, it is like wearing a uniform for Jesus. When people see our love, they know we are part of God's family!
How can we "put on" our uniform of love? Do you have any ideas how we can show love for other people every day? (allow answers) We can hold the door open for people who are carrying heavy bags. We can say "Bless you!" when someone sneezes. We can help our parents with chores around the house. There are lots of ways to put on our uniform of love! Your job this week is to find opportunities to let your love shine by showing love to others. Amen.
