Come and see

In some circles, the word "evangelism" is intimidating. Somewhere along the way evangelism became associated with being pushy and telling others what they should believe. Even The American Heritage Dictionary defines evangelism as "zealous preaching and dissemination of the gospel," and "militant zeal for a cause." I think that's a little heavy-handed.
I prefer to think of evangelism in a much more gentle way. Evangelism is simply sharing with others what you've experienced and inviting them to take a further look. That's how Jesus is in today's lesson. Some people were curious about him and wanted to know more about him. Jesus said "come and see." He invited them to come near and watch what he did. He didn't need to be pushy -- who he was and how he lived told them everything they needed to know.
When was the last time you or your family invited someone to church with you? Next time you think about it, ask yourself why you would ask someone. What are you hoping to share? What do you get out of going to church? Evangelism can be as simple as sharing your story with someone else. You aren't selling something; you are speaking about your own experience. Invite someone to come and have the experience with you. If you believe that you have something worth sharing, you should share it. That's how the message of Jesus Christ has been spreading around the world for 2,000 years.
