And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you -- not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ. (v. 21)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) This morning we're going to talk about water. How many of you have had a drink of water today? (allow answers) How many of you have used water today in other ways? (allow answers) How have you used water today? (allow answers)
We use water for lots of things. We drink water. We use water when we cook. We use water to wash our bodies, our clothes, and our homes. We use water to swim in after a hot day, and we put water on our plants to help them grow. Water is very important!
In fact, scientists say that the human body is made up of 60% -- more than half! -- water. Seventy percent of the earth is covered in water. Water in the sky comes together to form clouds, and water falls to the earth when it rains. In Bible times, people believed that the sky was a great ocean that God had separated from the earth. Why might they have thought that? (allow answers) The sky kind of looks like an ocean: an ocean has white waves, just like the sky has white clouds; the ocean is blue, just like the sky; and the ocean is wet, just like rain is wet -- and rain comes from the sky!
So water is very important to us as people who live on planet Earth. But water is also important to us as followers of Jesus. Can any of you think of a time when we use water during worship? (allow answers) We use water when we baptize people and welcome them into our church family. How many of you have been baptized? (allow answers) How many of you have seen someone baptized? (allow answers)
We use water in baptism to be a symbol of being clean. When we take a bath or a shower, we want to wash all of the dirt off ourselves. When we are baptized, it's like God is washing away all of our sins -- the "dirt" in our lives. Baptism is how God washes us clean and welcomes us to his family.
Next time you take a drink of water or go outside in the rain, think about baptism. Think about God using water to wash away our sins. And what God washes clean will be clean indeed! Amen.
