Don’t Be Fooled!
Children's sermon
Object:
A mask
“Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am He!’” (v. 8a)
Hello children,
It is fun and exciting to see you today. I hope you are happy to be here. I have a special message to share with you from the Bible and particularly Jesus’ words.
Jesus was talking to his disciples before he went away. He told them about scary things that were going to happen to the world and to them. Then he warned them “Beware that you are not led astray; for many will come in my name and say, ‘I am he!’”
When I put on this mask (presenter puts mask on self or on one of the children) and say I am ________________ , would you believe me?
That’s what a mask does. It pretends to be a person he or she is not!
Have you, just for fun, put on a Halloween mask? (children share)
Jesus warns the disciples, and us too, to be aware of people who put on a “Jesus mask” and say “I am the Messiah.” Don’t be fooled. People will falsely pretend they are very godly and super kind and unbelievably good, but are just putting on a mask. They are false. Beware. Run from them. Fast. Don’t be led astray by untrue lies and promises. Trust only the true Jesus of the Bible. None other.
How do we know if a person is wearing a false mask or not? We do have clues:
We ask is this a person of good will? Is this a person showing true and humble love?
Is this person honest and not false? Is this person a follower of Jesus and not a pretender of Jesus? Where do these clues and guidelines come from?
They come from our parents, our Sunday school teachers, our pastor and other believers who show us how to avoid being led astray.
When we spot a mask-wearer, or someone who is false, we will not be fooled!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, give us eyes in our hearts so we can see the true you and follow you even when times get tough. Amen.
