"Follow his directions"
Children's Activity
Object:
Teachers or Parents: The Gospel message is clear: if we
follow the directions Jesus gives us, we will have good results.
The apostles had fished all night with nothing to show for it.
When they threw the net where Jesus told them to throw it, they
caught a multitude of fish. We need to show the children the
benefits of following the directions of Jesus, our Lord and our
Savior.
*Have a "treasure hunt." Hide some candy or some other
"treasure" and then give written instructions on how to find it.
The first note will lead them to a second note and then to a third
and so on until they find the treasure itself. If weather permits,
have the treasure hunt outside. This can be done in small groups
if you have a large number of children. After the first group
finds the treasure, let the second group do it. Of course, you
must keep the groups separated while they are doing the exercise.
Those not hunting can be listening to the Gospel being read and
explained. When everyone has had their turn, discuss the
importance of following directions, and show them how God directs
our lives through the Bible.

Give these instructions: You are to connect all nine dots by
drawing 4 straight lines without lifting your pencil from the
paper. Let several children do it. It is doubtful if anyone can.
The solution entails drawing the lines outside the framework of
the nine dots in two different places. Beginning at point number 1
draw a diagonal line to the dot labeled number 2. Continue with a
horizontal line to the number 3 (which is outside the framework of
the dots. Then draw a diagonal line to number 4 (which is outside
the dot framework. Finish with a vertical line from number 4 back
to number 2.

Discuss how we often fail to follow instructions because we
add some restrictions that are really not there. In this case,
there was no instruction telling us we could not go outside the
dots to accomplish the mission. Use this as a way to show that we
need to listen very carefully to the instructions we are given by
God and do what he tells us to do.
