God's new people
Children's sermon
Object:
things that don't work, such as a pencil without lead, a burned out light bulb, some keys
Good morning! I need some help. I started to write a note this morning, and I picked up this pencil, and guess what? (let them answer) That's right; the lead is broken, and I can't use it. Then I went to go to another room and I couldn't get in because I didn't have the right key. I have all of these keys but none of them would open the door. I went to find a key that would fit, but when I turned the switch, there was a bright flash and then just darkness. Guess what happened to the light bulb? (let them answer) That's right; it burned out. So I have keys that don't fit, a pencil that doesn't write, and a light bulb that's burned out. Sounds like a bad day, doesn't it?
What should I do? (let them answer) Get a new light bulb. Okay, that should fix the dark room. Do you think maybe I can find the right key if I look in the room where there is light? I think so too. What about the pencil? Get a new one or sharpen the old one. Okay, I can get a new pencil. Now, I have solved all of my problems.
This reminds me of something that Jesus once talked about. He told some people that God was looking for a new group to share his ways with. The people in the old group were not listening anymore. Instead, they were making up things that God never told them.
Sometimes making up stories can get us into trouble, can't they? (let them answer) Do you ever forget to do things that your mom or dad tells you to do? (let them answer) That gets us into trouble also. And do you ever just talk back to your teacher or your mom and dad? (let them answer) That really gets us into trouble.
God had those kinds of problems with his people. He said that he was not going to put up with it anymore. Instead, Jesus said, God was going to share his teaching with other people like you and me. He thought that we would take him seriously and do what he tells us to do.
If God tells you what he wants, will you do it? (let them answer) If God speaks, will you listen? (let them answer) If God asks you to follow his ways, will you? (let them answer) Well, then I think you are just the kind of people God is looking for. You are his new pencil, his new light, and his new key. God has chosen you to be one of his new people. Are you happy that God chose you? (let them answer) I knew you would be. I think you will make great disciples for Jesus.
Prayer: O God, help us to live as your new people. Amen.
