God's servants
Children's sermon
Object:
seven cards with printed names (King, Queen, President,
Vice President, Boss, Leader, Servant)
Good morning! I have some cards with names printed on them,
and I want seven of you to choose one of these cards for a
demonstration I want to do. Here are the cards. (Show the cards
and read each one for the benefit of any child who doesn't read.)
_________, you pick first. (Name each child who you select in
order and let each pick a card. Chances are, the last card to be
picked will be "Servant." If not, you can vary the text to fit
that situation.)
Now, I notice that "Servant" was the last card to be picked.
Let me ask those who skipped that card to tell us why they chose
another card and not the "Servant" card. (Let them answer and
discuss why this card was not seen as the most desirable one.)
I guess all of us would rather be a king or a queen than a
servant. It seems like it would be better to be a president or a
leader of some kind than a servant. But do you know what? When
Jesus came to the earth, he came not to be a king or a president,
but to be a servant. He said, "I came not to be served, but to
serve, and to give my life as a ransom for many." We all need to
look at what he did and try to be like him. We need to be God's
servants. That means we need to be doing the things that God
wants us to do and helping other people. What kinds of things can
we do that serve other people? (Let them answer and talk with
them about the things that are done by your church to help other
people.)
Let's ask God to help us be good servants.
Dear God: Please help us to be Your servants as Jesus was. Show
us how we can help others and do the things that You want us to
do. Amen.
