Good qualities of leaders
Children's sermon
Object:
the makings of a "hero" sandwich and a bread board or other flat
surface
Good morning, boys and girls. It's time for school again. (Some of you
may already be in school.) How many of you take your lunch to school?
(Wait for show of hands.) Do you have a sandwich in your lunch? (Let them
respond.) What is your favorite kind? (Let them respond.) Most of you say
peanut butter or peanut butter and jelly. But there are a few who like
bologna or bologna and cheese. Maybe even a few of you will eat ham,
turkey, cheese, lettuce, mayonnaise, mustard and olives. Does that sound
good? (Let them respond.) Most of you are making faces. That's too much
on a sandwich for most of you. Most of your mouths are too small to fit
even a bite of that thick sandwich in your mouth. That's a pretty big
sandwich! Sometimes we call that a "hero" sandwich. I think it might be
because a person would have to like all those things at once and have a
very large mouth to open it that far.
I brought some sandwich things today and a board to fix it on. We're going to build a sandwich. (Point out all the things you brought for the sandwich and begin to put it together as you talk. As you put each item on, ask for show of hands of how many like each item.) As we were building our sandwich not all of you liked everything we put on our sandwich. If I gave it to you to eat, each of you might open it up and pick off the things you don't like.
Our verse today says to remember our leaders, especially the ones who tell us about God. Do you know any people that you like every single thing about them? (Let them respond.) I think it would be a pretty special person to be liked for everything about them. Leaders who teach us about God are human people, too, just like we are. They have very good things we like about them and they probably have some things we don't like about them. Maybe one person is loving. Maybe another one is very forgiving. Maybe another one is kind to children. We remember the good qualities of each person and that's what we choose to like about that person. Think of each good quality of the people you know as a part of a "hero" sandwich. Each good thing or ingredient of another person, you can choose to copy. That good part of another person becomes a good part of you. You are like the sandwich. You pick the good things you like to be on "your" hero sandwich.
