“When the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth...” (v. 13a)
Hello children,
Good morning. How are you this happy special morning? I say happy special morning because you are here, and together we get to celebrate Trinity Sunday. So today, on Trinity Sunday, can you pronounce the word Trinity? Repeat after me: Trinnnn - it- teeeee. (children practice an exaggerated “Trinnnnn – it- teeeee”). Trinity means three in one. God is three in one and one in three. God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit make up the Trinity. Trinity is an awesome mystery.
So on this Trinity Day we say a special “hello” to the Holy Spirit.
Jesus called the Holy Spirit the Spirit of Truth. The Holy Spirit of the Trinity is our guide into the truth.
First, let me ask you some questions: Is truth important? Is it easier to tell a lie or to tell the truth? (children discuss) Is it easier to be dishonest or honest? (children respond) Are you happiest to have a liar as a friend or to have a truthful person as a friend? (children respond) The spirit of truth is our guide. How awesome is that?
Let's pretend you are going on a safari into a wild and fearsome jungle. There are wild animals everywhere that want to eat you – like tigers and large snakes or crocodiles and panthers. What do you need the most - a walking stick or an experienced safari guide? (children respond) Yep. You need a person, a trustworthy experienced guide. (show photo or a safari image on your iPhone) Let's pretend you are learning a new math. What do you need most? A coloring book or a smart math teacher? (children respond) Whenyou are learning a new sport. What's best for you – a Google map or a coach? (children respond)
Like a good coach, the Holy Spirit of truth guides and teaches us. We can depend on the Holy Spirit of truth. When we are uncertain, the Spirit shows up. When we are fearful, the Spirit appears. When we are tempted to lie, the Spirit clears our minds and hearts. When we find it hard to pray, the Spirit even gives us the words to say. When our hearts are happy and full because of God's grace, the Spirit enables us to sing and dance. How awesome is that? (children respond)
Prayer: O Holy Spirit of truth you are the truth. Come, be our guide always. Amen.
