Children's sermon
Object:
a musical instrument
"The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works." (v. 10)
Good morning, boys and girls! How are you this morning? (allow answers) Today I have with me a musical instrument. Do any of you play a musical instrument? (allow answers) What instrument? (allow answers) Do you know anybody who plays a musical instrument? (allow answers) When a musical instrument makes a sound, it doesn't make a sound by itself. You could leave the instrument in the corner for years and years, and it would never make any sound. Instead, an instrument will only make a sound when the person who plays it hits a note or blows air through it or presses a key. Instruments cannot make music on their own -- an instrument needs a musician in order to make music!
In our gospel lesson, Jesus is kind of like an instrument. Jesus says this: "The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works." Does anybody know what this means? (allow answers)
What this means is that Jesus doesn't say things just because he wants to say them. Jesus is acting as God's instrument. He only says things that God wants him to say. God is like the musician who is working through Jesus to make music. Only this music is the word of God, made for us to hear! It's the very best music of all!
Are you an instrument for God? (allow answers) If you said no, why don't you think you are an instrument for God? (allow answers) Sometimes we think that we aren't good enough to be instruments for God. After all, we aren't Jesus! Jesus was God's perfect Son, and we are not even close to being perfect! But God doesn't ask for us to be perfect. A musician can use an instrument that is out of tune or dented. It might not be as easy to make beautiful music on a broken instrument, but a good musician will always find a way, no matter what kind of instrument he has to use.
Guess what? God is a master musician! We all can be instruments of God, even if we are not perfect. We can be instruments for God by showing God's love to everyone we meet. We can be instruments for God by saying kind things to others instead of mean things, and by doing the right thing even if we have tough choices to make. When we do the kind thing and the right thing, then we are singing the song that God wants us to sing -- we become his instruments, just like Jesus is. This week, make sure to sing God's song through all your actions. Be an instrument for God! Amen.
